fun with laptops
people are always telling me how wonderful wordpress, the blog software that runs this site is. you know what? it ISN’T.
because none of the instructions for making modifications to it (allegedly soooo easy and fabulous) make a lick of sense. i just want to send some posts from wordpress.org to a wordpress.com blog. and the only instructions i can find say things like:
To use it, download the zip and extract. (okay, done!)
1. Upload wp-xmlmigrate.php to wp-content/plugins/
(NO, because where the HELL is this? i’ve looked and looked and the closest i could find was wp-admin/plugins.php, and i don’t know what to do when i get there. i tried typing dianeshipley.com/wp-content/plugins.php but that just brought up my homepage.)
2. Upload wordpress.php to wp-admin/import/
(again NO, because where the HELL is this? how can i upload to somewhere that DOESN’T EXIST?)
3. Activate the plugin. (seems unlikely, somehow…)
can anyone help/translate before i throw my computer out of the window screaming “wordpress designers must die!”?

Heeeeeey! I’m a wordpress designer! Don’t wish for my death, kthx.
Is it for this site? You’re on WP 2.0.3. That’s pretty old. The newer versions have exporting and importing built-in.
Anyhoo, send me an email or something (I don’t think I have you on IM) and I’ll see if I can save your computer from death by gravity.

No, I don’t wish for your death! I think I mean more WP INVENTORS — why is it *so* hard to understand? Why am I on such an old version? Can I upgrade easily? How/where? I really, really appreciate any tips you can give - will email asap! x

I agree. In general it’s great…until you need to do something which isn’t simple. I still haven’t sorted out the DNS mapping on my blog because it breaks my email.
I’ve paid both Wordpress and my domain host company to upgrade my account to sort this, as I realise it’s more than should be expected for a free service, but without a customer service contact at Wordpress I can’t get the detail I need for my domain hosting peeps. *Sigh*

Hi Darika! *waves*
See that’s what annoys me - having to pay extra when really you feel there must be some way to sort things out… if only you knew what it was! My domain hosts take ages to get back to me, and it’s always via an impersonal ‘ticket’ system.
You would think upgrading WP and changing site themes should be a fairly easy thing, but… no so much. x
